Codex Poetics: Romantic Books and the Time of Reading

(Emily Rohrbach, English, American Studies and Creative Writing)

Emily’s project uses printed materials from 18th and 19th centuries to raise questions about how Romantic writers (poets, especially) understood the material technology of books.

This project will offer readings of lyric poems depicting books and reading in relation to material books themselves that these poets were reading, publishing, and depicting in their writing. Emily’s project also seeks to examine first editions of Romantic poetry to consider what aspects of print conditions Romantic poets are responding to in their lyric verse.

This project is funded by the JRRI Pilot grant and runs from September 2019 – July 2020.
