In Their Own Words: Poetry in translation in the UK after 1962
Florence Impens, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow.
'In Their Own Words' is a three-year project funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The project draws from the archives of poetry publishers Carcanet and Anvil Press, both of which are held at the John Rylands Library. It will provide the first historical overview of poetry in translation in Great Britain from the early 1960s to the start of the twenty-first century, a period which has seen a boom in the number of publications of this type.
Including two detailed case studies on Carcanet and Anvil Press, it will investigate the role played by key poetry publishers in the UK, as well as by individuals and institutions (funding bodies, literary prizes), in introducing Anglophone readers to a wealth of new material and creative possibilities, through the publication and promotion of poetry in translation.
